Team building refers to structured activities aimed at improving interpersonal relationships, trust, and collaboration within a group (Salas et al., 2015). It plays a valuable role in fostering connection and boosting morale in the workplace. However, while it contributes to short-term engagement, research suggests it is not sufficient for long-term team
performance.
According to a research by Salas (2015), although team-building exercises enhance social interaction, they often fail to address critical factors such as role clarity, shared goals, and continuous feedback. These elements are essential for effective teamwork and cannot be developed in a single session or retreat.
Harvard Business Review (2023), states that organizations that pair team building with ongoing coaching and leadership development see greater improvements in performance, communication, and resilience. This suggests that team building must be part of a broader strategy that includes structured support, reflection, and goal alignment.
In sum, team building sets a foundation but, sustainable results require consistent development beyond the event.
